I often believe I’ve been born a few centuries early and the likes of Huel make be believe that the future might not be that far away.
Huel is the brainchild of Julian Hearn, who saw the need to create a nutritionally complete meal that can be prepared in less than two minutes. Yes, you heard!
Essentially, it’s about creating efficient, healthy meals of the future.
Just look at them, they look futuristic as hell! Honestly, they look like something Tim Peake would have been eating up on ISS.
Anyone who has used MyFitnessPal in the past will be used to seeing their macros (carbohydrates, fats, protein), Huel also adds in fibre.
So these nutrition boffins over at Huel have split these like so: 37:30:30:3 – 37% of the energy comes from carbohydrates, 30% from fats, 30% from proteins and 3% from fibre.
Ultra-fine powdered oats
Flaxseed and sunflower seeds, and coconut
Pea and rice proteins and oat powder
Oats and flaxseed
What’s It Like?
To look at it you would mistake it for a protein shake and to be truthful, I’m not overly keen on them.
There’s a gritty feeling when you drink it; initially sweet but not quite the vanilla taste you’d expect. Word of warning though, do not drink this at room temperature – this tastes better when it’s cold.
The taste is quite distinct and strong and if you like it then great – but it might be worth testing it out with a small quantity.
Once you’ve had your meal (if you can call it that), you will be full until the next meal for sure. Could I drink it constantly? Absolutely not.
The thing is, the lads over at Huel don’t drink it 100%. They mix it up with other meals. In fact I was able to ask them some more questions about Huel and the thoughts behind it!
Q&A with Gulliver Waite from Huel
Q1. Where did the inspiration for Huel come from?
The idea came from when the co-founder, Julian Hearn, was on a diet plan for a former business of his. He had to stick to a strict diet to make sure he was getting all the nutrients his body needed, but found that making sure you got them all, and having all the time to prepare them, was a “nightmare”. That’s why he created Huel.
Q2. How long in the making has Huel been?
Huel was officially founded in early 2014, but we started selling Huel in June of 2015.
Q3. Do you guys live the Huel lifestyle?
Yes, everyone that works for Huel uses Huel because we all believe and enjoy it. None of us live on 100% Huel, though Julian has lived on 100% Huel for a month, whilst the other co-founder, James Collier BSc (Hons) RNutr lived on 90% Huel for the first few months of 2016. The rest of the time most of us float between using Huel for about 60% of our meals.
Q4. If you were to sell Huel to me in three words, what would they be?
Nutritionally complete food.
If you’re looking to try something different, to help you improve your diet, then Huel is 100% worth a shot.
If you want to get some yourself, you can from the Huel website.
